Associate Professor James Gain wins the UCT Distinguished Teacher Award
It is the highest accolade given to lecturing staff in acknowledgement of the value the University of Cape Town attaches to teaching and learning.
Associate Professor Gain adopts a constructivist approach to teaching. He engages students by incorporating interactive in-class exercises and encourages them to grapple with problems in different ways. He has been innovative in supporting in-class learning via the use of polling instead of costly clickers, to check understanding in class and gamification to improve student engagement and provide an impetus for active learning. Associate Professor Gain is described as an amazing teacher who makes complex material enjoyable and understandable, innovative in his use of learning devices, and passionate and approachable.
